Building Science 1

Building Science 1 talks about scientific concepts in relation to buildings and architecture and how we can design to accommodate the ever-changing environment. For this subject, we have 1 project which was a report about passive designs in green buildings. We were given two sites to do our studies in, choosing 1 building from each site. The first was in Singapore and the second in Kuala Lumpur.

Project 1: Case Study: Identify Innovative Passive Design Strategies

The main objective of this project is to understand various principles and concept about the environment and architecture, for example, studies about heat transfer, thermal comfort and passive design strategies. MS1525, UBBL, GBI and Green Mark were used as standard to analyze and criticize designs in a building. From this project we were able to identify environmental conditions, the sun's influence on the thermal performances of a building and also the importance of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on the passive design of a building.

In a group of 6, we conducted thorough research on the buildings: The National Library, Singapore and Platinum Sentral, Kuala Lumpur.
