Environmental Sustainable Design

Project 1: Green-Go 2013 International Short Film Contest

This project is to create an awareness video in the form of either a short film or a campaign video. The 3 topics were fixed and are as listed:
1) Life in plastic, is fantastic?
2) Water- The drop of life
3) Stayin alive

My chosen topic is Life in plastic, is fantastic? The idea is to raise awareness about how plastic products are polluting and contaminating the environment as well as arouse a sense of fear towards the negative effects of plastic.

This is a stop motion short film, made using a thousand plus frames put together. The materials used are daily plastic household products and waste. The genre goes on the wild side by having reference to horror. The main reason being to create the 'fear factor' towards plastic. Plastics contaminate our food, and have negative effects to our health. It also pollutes the environment and endanger animal species. We have become slaves to the plastic world, deeply relying on them. The message delivered is to reduce the usage of plastics before we are destroyed by plastic. This project had been a fun and exciting one, being able to put in all sorts of creativity. It gave me insight about video making and also a better understanding of our environmental needs. I've also learnt to accept different opinions openly.

Project 2: Appreciating Environment- Nothing is considered waste

For the second project, we as a group of 4 were required to conduct site visits to construction site and study about the types and management of waste. The first part of the project is to digitally create an A2 presentation board with the data we collected from the construction sites. Learning about waste materials taught us many innovative ways to handle different types of material and how to prevent wastage of these materials. The data tabulated was also something new to us as different sites may give different readings that vary up to large scales. We also have a better understanding about the impact of waste materials to the environment and ways to reduce wastage.

Presentation Board

Second part of the project requires us to create an object from waste materials, preferably functional. This is an individual task. We collected waste from construction sites and drafted the designs of an object that is creative and aesthetically pleasing. The waste materials that I used consist of timber formwork, stone tiles, mosaic tiles and ceramic chips. What I design and built is a classy and solid looking jewelry box. The interior is made of insulation foam cut and glued together.

End Product

 Presentation

Overall, this project gave us experience in documenting and analysing the management of construction waste. We also learned to work together in order to solve problems and discuss our collected data. Also, we've learnt innovative ways to create objects that can demonstrate the awareness and appreciation of environment.
