Design Studio 3

Studio 3 emphasizes a lot about the genius loci of the site in relation to our concept and design. Genius loci refers to a sense of place, and how it intertwines with poetic sensory in a design. For this studio, I experimented with digital presentation boards as well as incorporate 3D digital modelling into creating the final design.

Project 1: Journey for the 5 Senses

In the first project for design studio, understanding on different spatial types , use and experience is very important as an initial progress. Placing importance on case studies also showed that we can learn and experiment based on existing concept and ideas thus creating tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies with considerations on informing the uses and experiential conditions of a space. I learnt the importance and techniques of applying section-plan relationship with various architectural considerations. Brushing up on presentation skills also helped in communicating ideas to another party.

The project was conducted as a group project of 5 members which consisted of 2 parts. The first part (Part 1a) was about precedent studies which had to include 1 linear building and 1 concentric building. After long hours of discussion, we settled with Buffalo State Asylum for its unique accent when it comes to poetic spaces and Phillips Exerter Library for its serious but gentle expressions. We were required to study the spatial order and poetics of the selected precedent studies.

The second part involves a systematic follow up of designing a walk themed "Journey for the 5 senses" based on Project 1a and a chosen poem. A lot of effort was given into translating the poetry into a space. Deep thinking was placed in every process to decipher meanings and expression in the poem and transforming it into a conceptual space and design.

Project 2: Genius Loci: Site Analysis and Concept Development

Project 2 teaches us to produce site analysis which document, interpret and analyze the context and 'genius loci' of the space. Various information were studied and researched on and arranged onto the board digitally. This project included group work and individual work. For the group work, upon visiting and returning from our site visit at Labrador Park in Singapore, we discussed and worked on documenting the information.

The second part is an individual work, where focus is place on generating a concept in relation to the genius loci. This part involved a lot of sketching and mock up model making. Sketches that relate to the concept based on the site were also drawn to illustrate the message we want to convey.

Project 3: Genius Loci: Visitor Interpretive Center

The final project, Project 3 is where we put our concept and ideas from Project 2 into a proper and functional design. The design was generated based on the characteristics and condition of the site and its context. The design was drawn up in the perspective of a small scale community building which response to the site. Manual and digital drawings were created, modelling was also involved in generating the final design with consideration in plan-section relationship.
