Design Communication

Subject Learning Outcome

After completing this module, I have come to learn various types of architectural design communications and how concepts, space, forms and figures are integrated to convey the design through these drawings. I've also understood how to visualize and express forms and spaces in drawings, which enhances visual analysis of information which can be picked up from technical drawings. Constantly engaging myself in studying and taking in more information helped me to remain intellectually engage with everything I am learning. Furthermore, communicating via architectural drawings also taught me how to effectively convey a message in the context of a drawing.. Thus allowing me to apply these knowledge and theories into my projects while constantly revising ideas and refining the product for better improvements.

Project 1a: On-site Sketching

On-site sketching is a good way to practice visualizing something such as space, form and proportion. I learned to analyze my surroundings very elaborately and plan the execution of various sketches accordingly. This project also gave me better insights about my surroundings and the community.

On-site sketching trained me to capture the accurate proportion of a space or form, transferring moods and ambiance onto paper.

Project 1b: Tonal Values

Carrying out this project, which I had to focus on the tonal values in a sketch allowed me to understand the concept of space, depth and distance on a different level. I practiced viewing things from different perspectives, thus enabling me to communicate my sketches effectively.
Hatching

Cross-hatching

Stippling

Scribbling
It was a good exercise to practice controlling the outcome of a sketch by adjusting the intensity of tonal values. This assignment also demonstrated my capabilities to express a sketch through various sketching techniques.

Project 2a: Orthographic projections: Plans, sections, elevations

Upon completion of this project, I learned the basics of drafting in the traditional method. A lot reflecting and refining were needed in order to achieve subtle perfection. Manually drafting was a good challenge to me, as throughout the process, there were lots of details and symbols which can only be learnt by hand-drawing and experiencing them. Other important architectural elements I learned are inking the drafts with emphasis of line weights, line quality and hand lettering.

Project 2b: Axonometric projections

I learned how to draw axonometric projections throughout the duration of this project. The introduction to this form of design communication allows a larger space and scale to develop and express spatial concepts and architectural details in 3D. Various discussions were carried out with fellow course mates to come up with a standardized conclusion, to which heightened my communication skills and interpersonal skills. Reflecting on mistakes and flaws repetitively also ensured that I will produce legible architectural drawings.

Project 2c: Perspective

The learning outcome of working on this project are such as expressing spatial importance and architectural elements in the 3D form of 2-point and 1-point perspectives. Learning what is and how perspectives work gives a full understanding in the various ways of design communication. I studied about how perspective drawings play their role and how to apply them to constructing my drawings. This project encouraged critical thinking and problem solving skills as I try to measure and decide the ideal method to produce and convey a designed space.
